I was a book binder in college. I loved the feel of paper and the tactile experiences of turning the pages of books, and I still do. So, when my kids asked me how to make a book, I became at once both excited, and hesitant. Bookbinding can get pretty complicated pretty quickly, demanding precise measurements and special equipment. But…it doesn’t have to. Learning a few basic assembly techniques can be the foundation for a fun, freeform, yet functional project. The best way to learn how a book is made is to simply take one apart. However, this is also a good start. Here’s what you’ll need:
-1 paper grocery bag, or similar weight shopping bag
-10 sheets of 8.5″x11″ paper
-Tapestry needle (blunt point)
-Embroidery Floss
-Awl or something to make holes, such as a drill bit, small crochet hook, or mechanical pencil
-Glue (preferably a flat drying glue such as Mod Podge, mucilage glue, Yes! glue, etc., but regular Elmer’s is fine) and applicator brush, or piece of cardboard
– scissors
– paper cutter, or box cutter with straight edge and cutting surface
– Things to decorate
