If I had a dime for every look of disgust and horror I’ve gotten from drinking this smoothie over the years, I’d be a rich lady! The green tinge to the smoothie comes from fresh kale leaves which I blend very meticulously in my Vitamix blender. I have even, on occasion, substituted spinach.
Don’t fret, though, I was once in your shoes. The thought of putting green veggies into a smoothie made me a little queasy. How you sure you though, that there is nothing to fear with this one. It’s actually really good. Sometimes, I even drink it in lieu of coffee. Sometimes. And if that weren’t enough endorsement, all four of my picky eaters absolutely love drinking this.
These are more or less guidelines, so feel free to substitute things and add more or less of something you like or don’t. For example, today, I noticed my kale leaves were very small, so I used three instead of the two that I normally would use. If I am going to work out after, I add a scoop of my favorite protein powder. If you want to make this vegan, use soy milk, or your favorite milk substitute. If you are carnivorous, I guess adding a scoop of ground beef to this would also work, but that’s just wrong (I’m not judging, though). As long as you have the main ingredients, you can’t go wrong!
Allaya’s Scary Green Smoothie
1 banana, peeled
1 large spoonful of your favorite nut or seed butter
2 large leaves of kale, long stalks removed
2/3 to 1 cup milk or milk substitute
A squirt or two of chocolate syrup or maple syrup, to suit taste (I also will not judge if you use Nutella)
1 scoop of your favorite protein powder
3 ice cubes
Put everything into a blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy!
